RJ02 - Reflective Journal Entry 2 - Due Saturday, Jan 31, 2009

  • Reflect some of the ways that you want to assess your students, i.e. monitor whether they are understanding what you're teaching.
  • Describe your grading policy, i.e. how you will assign scores to represent performance. Explain why you are using this method. If you are continuing your CT's grading policy, explain what you feel are some of its strengths and weaknesses.
  • Use the template "EDC 484 RJ02 - Assessment and Grading". We will use your goals to investigate grading on this Tuesday.

The first way I want to asses my students is through opening and closing activities. Ideally, I want to see their net learning from the begging of the class to the end of class. I'm also trying to find non traditional assessment methods that seem appropriate for the students' maturity level. The student being so social at this age I am finding it difficult to get them to focus when doing small group activities in class. I'm also trying to monitor by the questions being asked. Currently, I feel to overwhelmed to try and remember who is asking what to give the student any type of score associated with it.

I am currently continuing my CT's method of grading. She uses a program called Easy Grade Pro which is a wonderful tool. You can do many differnt things which makes your life easier as a teacher. I would highly recommend it. http://www.orbissoft.com/
She is using a weight grading system for her grades. She also posts the grades weekly in the class room. I personally like the weighted system because I can change move the assignments to different categories if i feel the students did poorly and need a boost. The students also seem to hate math. Doing density with them was a nightmare according to my CT. The did not even want to do d=m/v, much less calculate their grade like Dr. Fogleman suggested in class.
